What happens when I first look to join?
This page is designed to help you understand what you need to understand our process and what happens in classes
Engagement and the first lesson
It’s important to recognise that joining a school is establishing what should be a long term relationship between you and the instructors. Your first lesson is as much about you assessing your fit with the school and its instructors as it is for us to assess your overall beginning fitness level and capability. This is why the trial lesson is free – so that we can both determine how well you will fit in with our school and our ideals.
Our longer-term goal is that you will train with us, not just to achieve a black belt, but to understand the philosophy and the art in martial arts.
Structure of the trial lesson
When you first enter, you will join in with the rest of the class for the warm-up. Don’t worry if you feel you can’t do anything or that you’re unfit – for many, fitness is a major attraction to joining a martial art. After the warm-up, an instructor will take you to one side away from the rest of the class to start to learn some of the basic defensive and offensive techniques.
You will then rejoin the rest of the class for the warm down and any fun activities that we do.
To get started, fill in the Form so we can discuss all the what, when, where details.
It is not expected that you show up for your first visit kitted up like Bruce Lee or the lady in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. We will ask you to come modestly dressed in clothes that are easy to move around in, including sitting. Loose pants, a standard t-shirt, and no shoes are a good starting point.
No jewelry (rings, bangles, chains, dangling earrings). Minimal makeup & perfumes, please. You are going to sweat if we are doing this right.
